This AI prompt shows how your photo might have been taken
You know the finished photo. But where was the photographer standing? How were they holding the camera? And what was just outside the frame?
This AI prompt can reconstruct exactly that.
You give the AI the original photo and, in addition, a photo of the person who took it. It then creates a new realistic image showing the same moment from an outside perspective.
For a selfie, the original photo is enough.
How it works
- Upload the original photo.
- Upload a photo of the photographer if someone else took the picture.
- Copy the following prompt into ChatGPT.
- Generate the image.
The complete prompt
Use the uploaded photo as the main reference.
Create one highly realistic image showing how this exact photo was taken, viewed from outside the original frame.
Preserve as closely as possible:
* the same people and identities
* facial features and expressions
* poses and clothing
* location, lighting, action and mood
* important objects
Reveal the plausible wider setup:
* camera or phone position
* photographer
* shooting angle
* spatial relationship between photographer, subjects and surroundings
If it is a selfie, show the person holding the device in the position needed to create the original image. Otherwise show the photographer or camera realistically positioned. If Image B is provided, use that person as the photographer.
PERSONAL CONTEXT:
Use relevant non-sensitive knowledge from previous conversations, memory and the current chat to enrich the newly revealed area outside the original frame. Add a few recognisable objects, details or subtle Easter eggs connected to the depicted person’s known hobbies, projects, work, interests or recurring themes.
Only use context that is actually known and plausibly fits the scene. Do not invent personal facts. Keep these additions secondary and naturally integrated rather than prominently staged. If no relevant prior context is available, add nothing.
Keep the original aspect-ratio orientation.
Create one continuous realistic scene only. No split-screen, collage, text, frame or before/after layout.
The result must feel like the exact same moment, simply seen from outside, with subtle personal details that reward closer inspection.
Where information outside the original frame is unknown, reconstruct it plausibly and conservatively.
What happens
Unlike many AI photo prompts, this prompt is not intended to transform the original photo into a different style.
The people, clothing, pose, mood and surroundings should remain as consistent as possible. What mainly changes is the perspective: the AI expands the space outside the original frame and reconstructs where the camera and photographer might have been.
If a second photo is uploaded, it serves as the reference for the person behind the camera.
The result can therefore look like a genuine behind-the-scenes photo of the same moment.
Important: The AI does not know what was actually outside the original image frame. Missing information is reconstructed plausibly. The result is therefore an AI reconstruction and not proof of how the photo was actually taken.
Try it with your own photo
Choose a photo, upload the original and, if applicable, an image of the photographer, then copy the prompt.
If you share the result, show the original photo first and the AI reconstruction afterwards. This makes the effect immediately understandable.
Additional Prompt Variations
The base prompt can be combined with additional extensions. This allows the same idea to be developed in different directions.
At the Beginning of Photography

What would the creation of the photo have looked like if it had been taken during the early days of photography?
Prompt Extension:
Reconstruct the same moment as if it had been photographed around the 1840s–1850s using historically accurate early photographic technology. Translate clothing, objects and surroundings into plausible period equivalents while preserving identities, expressions, poses and composition.
Everything Goes Wrong

The actual photo remains the perfect moment. Around it, however, funny mishaps, accidents and unexpected things are happening that cannot be seen in the finished photo.
Prompt Extension:
Preserve the original photo-taking moment, but reveal many funny, harmless and physically believable mishaps happening outside the original frame. Create several connected chain reactions and background jokes while the people in the original photo remain essentially unaware and unchanged.
The Sculptor

An unusual variation in which the creation of the image is connected to a sculptor and their work.
Prompt Extension:
Instead of being photographed, show the exact original image being recreated by a stone mason as a detailed carved stone relief. Preserve identities, expressions, poses and composition. Show the artisan actively carving it in a realistic workshop with tools, stone dust and unfinished areas.
On a Film Set

The scene is expanded as if the original photo were part of a film production. Outside the original frame, it becomes visible what is happening on set around the shot.
Prompt Extension:
Reconstruct the same moment as if it were being filmed on a professional movie set. Reveal the believable production environment outside the original frame, including camera crew, lighting, sound and set equipment where appropriate. Preserve the original moment unchanged.
